orangutan sabangau national park Sabangau National Park is a protected forest in Central Kalimantan, a province of Indonesia in Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo established in 2004. It is centered on Sabangau River, a blackwater river that flows through the Kahayan jungle or Sebangau peat swamp forest, between the Katingan and Kahayan rivers. The peat swamp forest is a dual ecosystem, with diverse tropical trees standing on a 10m – 12m layer of peat – partly decayed and waterlogged plant material – which in turn covers relatively infertile soil. The Sabangau National Park is one of the last remaining peat swamp forests in Borneo. The vast national park covering approximately 568,700 hectare is home to over 6,000 orangutans, the largest wild population of this great ape anywhere in the world. Sabangau National Park is also home to the endangered species such as the Malayan sun bear, gibbons, hornbills, clouded leopard, snakes, and many more.
