Wild Orangutan Tours – Duration: 04 Days/03 Nights – Grade: Easy

The Bornean orangutan is one of the greatest apes in the world. It is also the world’s largest arboreal mammals. They have long, shaggy, dark red-brown hair. Facial color ranges from pink to red to black. They have long arms that are useful for reaching fruits and brachiating. Scoop-like hands and feet have powerful grips for grasping branches. Cheek pads in adult males make the face look larger, although not all the adult males have cheek pads. A throat pouch is inflated to produce loud, long calls to alert their whereabouts.

Based on genetic studies, there are three subspecies of Bornean orangutan, namely: Pongo Pygmaeus Pygmaeus in the northwest of Borneo, Pongo Pygmaeus Wurmbii in Central Borneo and Pongo Pygmaeus Morio in the northeast of Borneo. From the three Bornean subspecies, the central Bornean orangutans (P.P. Wurmbii) are the largest and the northeast Bornean orangutans (P.P. Morio) are the smallest. The population of Bornean Orangutan now isolated in many habitat fragments. Prevab area in the Kutai National Park (Prevab KNP) is one of the few important natural habitats of Pongo Pygmaeus Morio remaining in East Kalimantan.

Day 01 ARRIVAL IN SAMARINDA – SANTAN ULU – SANGATTA

first agenda of Wild Orangutan Tours is meet at airport and directly driving across villages, rainforest, and mountainous landscape to reach Santan Ulu village for visiting the equatorial monument. Afterwards, proceed to Sangatta town for check in to local hotel. (L,D)

Day 02 SANGATTA – KABO VILLAGE – KUTAI NATIONAL PARK – SANGATTA

After breakfast, we will drive to Kabo village for crossing up the river into Prevab camp of Kutai National Park. We will then trekking to the jungle to spot wild orangutans, monkeys, birds, insects, etc. Return to the camp for lunch and take a rest. In the afternoon, we will trek again but in the different trails to spot more wild orangutans and other wildlife as well as the magnificent flora of the national park. In the peaceful evening, we will have a night trekking for observing nocturnal animals such as tarantula, tarsier, insects, birds, and others. Return to the camp for crossing down the river back to Kabo village while having a boat safari exploring wildlife on riverside. Afterwards, driving back to the hotel in Sangatta town. (B,L,D)

Day 03 SANGATTA – DELTA SANGATTA – SAMARINDA

After breakfast, we will drive to the Jetty for taking a boat crossing downward the river into Delta Sangatta to spot estuarine crocodile, proboscis monkeys, silvery langurs, monitor lizards, and other wild animals that hang around the riverside. Afterwards, proceed to Samarinda for overnight at hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 04 SAMARINDA – DEPARTURE

Breakfast at hotel and free at your own leisure till the proper time for transferring to airport for your flight to next destination. (B)
