Tanjung Puting National Park (where Camp Leakey Orangutan is located) was originally the Tanjung Puting Wildlife Preserve comprising of Sampit Nature Preserve and Kotawaringin Wild Preserve, set by Dutch Colonial Government in 1936, covering an area of 305,000 hectares for protection of orangutan and proboscis monkey.
The government of Indonesia announced it as a national park in 1984 with the area about 300,040 hectares. In 1996, the area was upgraded to 415,040 hectares encompasses the Tanjung Puting Wildlife Preserve of 300,040 Hectares, former production forest of 90,000 hectares and area of water territory of 25,000 hectares approximately. It is a conservation area to protect rare animals such as; orangutan, proboscis monkey, hornbill, etc. The area is also a kind of ecosystem of lowland tropical rainforest, swamp, and mangrove forest.

Day 01 ARRIVAL IN PANGKALAN BUN – TANJUNG PUTING NATIONAL PARK
Meet at airport and directly transfer to Kumai village for boarding the houseboat to Tanjung Puting National Park. The houseboat is a traditional wooden river boat with roof forms the upper deck where you can view the rainforest as it glides by. The boat crew including the boatman, cook and expert guide. In the afternoon, we will slowly explore the romantic river by the houseboat while observing the primates along the riverside. In the peaceful evening, we can do night trekking to explore wildlife, such as; tarantula, sleeping birds, frogs, mousedeers, insects, etc. Staying overnight at houseboat or Rimba Lodge with dining on the boat, with facilities; mattress, pillow, fine meals, bottled “mineral” water, mosquito net, kitchen, and simple toilet available on boat besides the familiar helpful guides and boatmen. Day 02 TANJUNG PUTING NATIONAL PARK
After breakfast, we will board the houseboat for cruising upward to Pondok Tanguy to explore the rehabilitation center of the new ex-captive orangutans. Next, return to houseboat for sailing upward the creek to Camp Leakey Orangutan where the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rainforest. At this station, we will explore the story of first orangutan project in the world, we will then trekking to the feeding station to see rehabilitated orangutans are given additional foods. Afterwards, we will sail down the river while exploring the nature and wildlife on riverside. Lunch and dinner will be served at houseboat. Staying overnight at Rimba Lodge or houseboat. (B,L,D)
Day 03 TANJUNG PUTING NATIONAL PARK – DEPARTURE
After breakfast, we will get the morning safari to explore wildlife on riverside. Afterwards, proceed to Kumai village to catch the car for driving to Pangkalan Bun airport for your flight to next destination. (B)
