wild orangutan in sebangau national park The Borneo rainforest is 130 million years old, 70 million years older than the Amazon forest, making it one of the oldest rainforests in the world. The island largely consists of dense jungle and mountains, much of the terrain is virtually impassable, and large areas are still unexplored. There are about 15,000 species of flowering plants with 3,000 species of trees (267 species are dipterocarps), more than 222 species of terrestrial mammals, 420 species of resident birds in Borneo, and more than 3,000 species of anthropod fauna with 1,000 species of it are ants. There are also about 440 freshwater fish species in this huge island, it is about the same as Sumatra and Java combined. Borneo is the center of the evolution and distribution of many endemic species of plants and animals. The Borneo rainforest is one of the few remaining natural habitats for the endangered Bornean orangutans.

Day 01 ARRIVAL IN BANJARMASIN – DAYAK VILLAGE

Arrive in Banjarmasin airport with morning flight and directly driving to Cabai Village to start the trek into the Dayak Village in the foot of Meratus Mountain. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight at Dayak longhouse or camping at riverside. (L,D)

Day 02 JUNGLE TREKKING

After breakfast, we will pack our stuff and then trekking to Takung dense primary forest crossing villager farmlands, cinnamon and rubber trees, wilderness, hills, rivers and cascades. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight at jungle camp. (B,L,D)

Day 03 JUNGLE TREKKING – HARATAI WATERFALL

After breakfast at jungle camp, we will be trekking down to Haratai waterfall crossing wilderness, rivers and cascades, hills, hanging and suspended bamboo bridges, villager farmlands, longhouse, cinnamon and rubber trees. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight at the camp near the waterfall. (B,L,D)

Day 04 HARATAI WATERFALL – BAMBOO RAFTING – SUNGAI RUTAS – BANJARMASIN

After breakfast, we will be trekking down to Loksado to get the adventure trip of bamboo rafting across beautiful landscape of tropical rainforest along the riverside meanwhile our coach will be waiting on the downstream for driving to Sungai Rutas village to get our boat crossing the romantic river to spot wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, long tailed macaque, silvery langurs, birds, monitor lizards, and other wild animals on the riverside as well as the daily activities of local people. Afterwards, proceed to Banjarmasin for staying overnight at hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 05 FLOATING MARKET  – JUMPUN PAMBELOM – PALANGKA RAYA

Early in the morning, we will leave to floating market to explore the unique culture of Banjarese that trade commodities from boat to boat, then return to hotel crossing Banjarmasin River while sightseeing people activities at riverside. Breakfast at hotel and then driving across the beautiful peat swamp forest landscape to reach Jumpun Pambelom for observing the reforestation project on the peat swamp area. If we are lucky, we can meet wild orangutan and other wild animals on this small forest. Afterwards, proceed to the hotel for overnight. (B,L,D)

Day 06 PALANGKA RAYA – ORANGUTAN ISLAND – SEBANGAU NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, we will proceed to the jetty for catching our motorized canoe to reach the Orangutan Island while sightseeing the romantic river and rainforest around, just keep an eye out for monkeys and birds. The orangutan island is managed by Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) for orangutan rehabilitation before releasing to the wild. We will then driving across beautiful landscape of peat swamp forest into Kereng Pakahi Port to cross the Katingan River while sightseeing wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, kingfishers, hornbills, long tailed maccaques, etc. Afterwards, proceed to Sebangau National Park through Punggu Alas creek for check in to homestay. In a very dry condition of the creek, we have to trek for about 1,5 hours to reach the homestay at WWF Visitor Centre in Sebangau National Park. In the peaceful evening, we can explore the nocturnal animals around the camp. (B,L,D)

Day 07 SEBANGAU NATIONAL PARK – PALANGKA RAYA

After breakfast on the creekside, we will do trekking with ranger into the jungle to explore flora and fauna such as orangutans, monkeys, birds, endemic vegetation, etc. Return to the camp for having lunch and take a rest. In the afternoon, we will check out the homestay and proceed back to Palangka Raya for check in to local hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 08 PALANGKA RAYA – DEPARTURE

Breakfast at hotel and free at your own leisure till the proper time for transferring to airport for your flight to next destination. (B)
