Orangutan Island & River Trip

Bapalas Island is one of the 5 islands of Nyaru Menteng, the biggest rescue and rehabilitation center for orangutans in the world. The island is large and holds around 50 or more individuals. In the wild they would of course be more spread out because of the dispersal of food resources. On the island, the supplemental feedings are in much closer proximity to one another. Some will become naturally more independent and solitary and others will remain in small groups, learning and exploring together, but they will also eventually start to go their own way which is a good sign. They will be released into the wild in small groups as well, where they will have the choice to stay together or to venture out more on their own. Here in Bapalas Island, male and female orangutans must prove that they can survive in the wild.

Day 01 ARRIVAL IN BANJARMASIN – BARITO RIVER

Meet at airport and directly transfer to hotel for check in. Next, we will cross downward the Barito River to the estuary for exploring the fascinating mangrove forest which is inhabited by proboscis monkeys, black leaf monkeys, long tailed maccaques, and species of birds. Return to hotel crossing beautiful rice field, forest, and remote villages. Free at your own leisure. (D)

Day 02 FLOATING MARKET – PALANGKA RAYA

Early in the morning, we will leave to floating market to explore the unique culture of Banjarese that trade commodities from boat to boat, then return to hotel crossing Banjarmasin River while sightseeing people activities at riverside. We will then continue our trip by driving across the beautiful peat swamp forest landscape to reach Palangka Raya to stay overnight at the hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 03 PALANGKA RAYA – ORANGUTAN ISLAND – AIRPORT

After breakfast, we will proceed to the jetty for catching our motorized canoe to reach Orangutan Island while sightseeing the beautiful natural black river and rainforest around, just keep an eye out for monkeys and birds. Free at your own leisure till the proper time for transferring to airport for your flight to next destination. (B)
