Tanjung Puting National Park Birding

Tanjung Puting Tours – Tanjung Puting National Park is one of the natural wonders of the world. It is covered by a complex mosaic of diverse lowland habitats. Contains another 3,040 km2 of low lying swampy terrain punctuated by blackwater rivers which flow into the Java Sea. Tanjung Puting is the habitat of the only Asian Great Ape (Orangutans). This national park also boasts the bizarre looking proboscis monkey with its disproportionate nose as well as. There are seven other primate species, clouded leopards, civets; malayan sun bears cavort, mousedeers, barking deers, sambar deers, and wild cattle. The national park hosts over 230 species of birds including the special birds like; Bornean Bristlehead, Garnet Pitta, Great Argus and Bulwer Pheasants, Storm’s Stork, Crested Fireback, Banded Woodpecker; Black and Rhinoceros Hornbills, Rofous-tailed Shama, Black and white bul-bul, and Wallace’s Hawk-Eagle.

Day 01 ARRIVAL IN PANGKALAN BUN – TANJUNG PUTING NATIONAL PARK

Tanjung Puting Tours’ starting point is to meet at the airport. Then directly transfer to Kumai village for boarding the houseboat to Tanjung Puting National Park. The houseboat is a traditional wooden river boat with roof forms the upper deck. You can view the rainforest as it glides by. The boat crew including the boatman, cook and guide. In the peaceful afternoon, we will slowly explore the romantic river by the houseboat. While observing the primates and birds along the riverside; such as racket tailed drongo, little green and pink necked pigeons; spotted dove, stork billed kingfisher, herons, kinds of bul-bul, etc. Lunch, dinner and staying overnight at the houseboat. Day 02 TANJUNG PUTING NATIONAL PARK

Early morning, we will proceed to Pondok Tanggui Station of which is inhabited by species of birds such as greater and lesser coucals, kinds of bul-bul, chestnut bellied and raffless malkohas bristlehead; red throated barbet, hooded and garnet pittas, sunda pygmy and banded woodpeckers; minivet, leafbird, babblers, flowerpeckers, trogons, bulwer’s pheasant, asian paradised flycatchers, etc. Next, boarding the houseboat for cruising upward the creek into Camp Leakey; where the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rainforest. At this station, we will explore the story of first orangutan project in the world. We will then trekking to the feeding station to see rehabilitated orangutans are given additional foods. Afterwards, cruising downward the river and staying overnight at the houseboat. During the boating, we will have opportunity to spot some birds on riverside; such as stork billed and blue eared kingfishers, black and red broadbills; rhinoceros, black and oriental pied hornbills, storm’s stork, etc. In the peaceful evening, we can do night trek to explore wildlife, such as; tarantula, sleeping birds, frogs, mousedeers, insects, etc. Lunch, dinner and staying overnight at the houseboat. Day 03 TANJUNG PUTING NATIONAL PARK

Early morning, we will do birdwatching to spot species of birds such as greater and lesser coucals, kinds of bul bul; chestnut bellied and raffless malkohas, red throated barbet, hooded and garnet pittas, sunda pygmy and banded woodpeckers; minivet, leafbird, babblers, flowerpeckers, trogons, asian paradised flycatchers, etc. Lunch will be served on boat while sighting wild animals and birds along the riverside. Back to the houseboat for enjoying the natural river view cruising while sightseeing birds at the riverside. Lunch and dinner will be served at the houseboat. (B,L,D)

Day 04 TANJUNG PUTING NATIONAL PARK – DEPARTURE

Breakfast at the houseboat and cruising down Sekonyer River while exploring wildlife and birds at the riverside. Then return to Kumai port to catch the car for driving to Pangkalan Bun airport for your flight to the next destination.(B)
